Saddle stitched booklets typically take 3 to 5 working days to produce; PUR bound booklets take 5

to 7 working days because the glue needs curing time before trimming. Add courier time on top —

usually, 1 to 2 days for main centers, longer for outlying areas.

Those are production-facility numbers, and they start from artwork approval, not from when you

place the order. That distinction causes more missed deadlines than anything else in printing, so it is

worth spelling out.

Why does the clock start at artwork approval?

Because nothing can print until the file is right. When your artwork arrives, it goes through a preflight

check: bleed, resolution, color mode, page count, fonts. If something fails — and on booklets,

something often does — the file comes back to you, and the production clock has not started yet.

The most common booklet artwork problems, in order:

1. Page count not divisible by four (saddle stitch requires it)

2. Missing bleeds on pages where images run to the edge

3. Spreads supplied as single wide pages instead of individual pages

4. Low-resolution images that looked fine on screen

Fixing any of these takes you an hour but can change the schedule by a day or two. Getting the file right first time is

the single biggest thing you can do to control your deadline.

Why does PUR binding take longer than saddle stitch?

PUR adhesive needs time to cure before the book block can be trimmed and packed — rushing it

risks pages pulling loose. Saddle stitching has no cure time: fold, stitch, trim, done. If your deadline is

tight and your page count allows either binding, saddle stitch buys you several days.

How far ahead should you order?

Work backwards from the date you need booklets in hand:

• Event programmes and conference materials: order [3 weeks] out. Events do not move; your buffer

has to absorb every possible delay.

• Catalogues and price lists: [2 to 3 weeks] out.

• Anything involving a proof approval round: add another [3 to 4] days.

A printed hardcopy proof is worth the extra days on any long-run or high-stakes job. Screen colours

lie; paper does not.

Can booklet printing be rushed?

Sometimes, and it is always worth asking — but honest answer: a genuine rush depends on what is

already on the presses that week. If every printer you call says yes to a 48-hour booklet without

asking a single question about spec, be suspicious.

Do working days include weekends?

No. Working days are Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays. A "5 working day" job ordered on

a Thursday afternoon lands the Thursday or Friday of the following week.

Does quantity change the turnaround?

Less than you would think. 200 booklets and 2,000 booklets go through the same steps; the press run

itself is the fast part. Very large runs add a day or two at finishing.

When does courier time start?

When the job is complete and packed — production time and shipping time are sequential, not

overlapping. Cape Town customers can skip courier time entirely by collecting from our facility in

Epping.
